Carolyn Phillips
finches search for wild seeds
backyard feeders are empty now
the maple and the oak breathe deeply again
at the landfill kudzu enshrouds
the dross in orgiastic green,
tendrils lashing cell phone
and laptop together
in incestuous embrace
silent messages clog coaxial cables
the words piling on each other
in a jumble of unheard cries
and leaf-cutter ants march along
carrying the precise shapes needed
for their underground nursery
as they have always done.
